Scott McMillan : Endurance Junky

Week Four - Still Fat, Rock Climbing and Pump up the Volume.

January 29th, 2007 · 3 Comments

Good week of training. Increased my volume of aerobic training from the last week by over 4 hours. I also finished the week by doing some “Trad Climbing” in Squamish with Chris and let me tell you I am in f*cking pain. Endurance athletes have weak upper bodies and it showed today. Chris told me he was going to take it easy on me… which he didn’t. I think he was taking revenge for the Cypress hill climb I punished him on in the past. He taunted me saying your not stopping until you bleed “Enduro Boy” and boy did I bleed…

It did make me realize one thing I have to do more cross training and enjoy other sports. Rock climbing is hands down much more challenging than running could ever be. You have to conquer fear, problem solve, train hard, fight pain and plan you need a lean killing machine body which is strong like a body builder but thin like a runner (I say they are built like the milers of the running world). A great sport and of benefit to runners because it trains the core so thoroughly and most importantly I think it improves you pain threshold by a few levels.

Here is this weeks break down:

Easy Run False Creek Loop

Great run nothing better than a rip though trails to start the weekend, Tara even came out and logged some miles.

PM:

Time: 1:46
AHR: 138
MHR: 172
Fun ride. Cody is a madman kept me entertained the whole time discussing his issues.

Rock climbing in Squamish. 5 pitches total time around 1 hr of climbing. VERY HARD! I love it.

I am not much of an endurance athlete but my mate is and he was the same as you when he climbed but now he has been going for so long he isnt really effected him and he does do better in his other things. Keep it up and i’m sure you will feel the benefits.

    James,
I plan to. I bought the gear the last week. I think it will be great cross training. I would like to adventually get into the more of the mountaineering aspects but this is the first step.
